The Tree

 ( For Maxine )

A man stood underneath a tree
A heart carved in the bark
Though the tree may stand for years to
come

The love it was intended for
May never see the tree
Or the cut that is the deepest
And the lonely heart that bleeds

When strangers in the future
Look upon the bark
They will not see the tenderness
That went to carve the heart

And when the tree has fallen
With age or by machine
No one will know carved in that bark
The greatest love had been
