She Matters Most, Your Wife

He was a Bee in a Rose-garden,
Seeking nectar from its flowers;
Unable to quench his thirst, one day,
He had soon forgotten that
She was a Rose in the same garden!
His wife- a flower so rare,
Beautiful beyond compare,
Ready to blossom some day,
To perfume his life some way.

To forgive is divine, err mundane;
To learn from other’s blunders- humane;
So, forget the past and start afresh,
For you aren’t too old today!

When the devil can get credit,
Why not your wife her bit?
’Tis better late than never
To make up with her some way!
For, se is a Rose in your own garden,
A flower so very, very rare,
Beautiful beyond compare,
Waiting to serve all through life,
She matters most, your Wife!

A TRIBUTE TO MY FATHER

My Father was a great teacher,
Good husband to my good Mother;
He taught his pupils very well;
In an old house, did he dwell.

Well he reared his children seven!
Lived for up to eight times ten;
His forehead sweat fell on the soil;
My Father so well, did he toil.

A man who possessed great talents;
And honesty par excellence;
Cheap Politics did he eschew;
This world hath seen but very few.

He lived in humble conditions;
A law-abiding citizen;
He gave us good education;
And raised us well in religion.

He’s born and bred in piety;
And rose in popularity;
A logic-man, Philosopher;
None could him well decipher.

A versatile man, Orator;
He tried to make a new order;
Oppressed, he died with plenty peace;
Yet in god, he lived in ease.

His learning to him was his wealth!
Together with his body’s health;
And she was great too, my Mother;
Who well-supported my Father.

A human ‘immortal’-being!
With yeoman-service worth seeing;
He loved the poor and downtrodden;
That fetched him place sure in Heaven.

Sonnet: Amidst

Amidst pitch -black darkness, God shows a light;
Amidst a Forest thick, He shows a way;
Amidst black clouds, He brings a moonlit night;
Amidst sorrows, God gives a happy day.

Amidst the desert, Oasis God shows;
Amidst the stormy Sea, He brings calm;
Amidst much strife, He opens newer doors;
Amidst much hopelessness, a helping palm.

Amidst tempest, God shows a bright light-house;
Amidst the glaciers, much sought-after peak;
Amidst our solitude, He gives a spouse;
Amidst the ravines deep, the lost lamb meek.

Amidst the chaos, God ushers new hope,
Amidst the gloom, He gives the church a Pope.

Sonnet: Let Me Be

God, let me be a bird upon a tree,
That hurts no one but sings melodious songs;
And leads a life, doing no sin, carefree;
And yet, some put it to the fiery-tongs!

God, let me be a pretty butterfly,
That flies in search of nectar all its life;
And like a lazy man, let me not die,
And sleep log-like in filth, despite soul’s strife.

God, let me be a snail bellying across;
And carrying on its back, its house of shell!
What is the use of human life with gloss,
Leading a sinful life/ landing in Hell?

God, let me be like humble servant Job
With forbearance, and get my Heavenly robe.

Sonnet: The Elderly

Show consideration for an aged man;
Show courtesy to elderly persons;
Inhuman ways to human lives, you ban;
To do a thing, have sufficient reasons.

Their frame is frail and mind is filled with fear;
Assault of any kind, they cannot bear;
They can’t see well or sleep or even hear;
The elderly need special love and care.

Their growing age is their sweet punishment;
They flex with age and become like a child;
Their Will-power is their great armament;
Their days are numbered- why should we turn wild?
Let’s look after the elderly with pride!
Their words are wise and let’s therefore abide.

Sonnet: Laughter

If we can laugh, our heart-aches disappear!
Our minds become freed off tensions and stress;
If we make others laugh, they lose their fear,
And become dear, starting to us caress.

Laughter is good for both the young and old;
Laughter can turn a foe into a friend;
Laughter can help forget our woes, be bold;
Laughter can bring to grief, an early end.

Laughter is life’s most precious medicine;
Laughter is soothing balm for all our ills;
Laughter is euphoric much more than wine,
Causing no harm to one/ increasing bills.
Then laugh and be merry, whenever you can,
For, that’s the way to live life better, man.

Sonnet: On Cancer

Poem: If Cancer’s on the rise without much cure;
Then blame the air, food, water-pollutant;
The dismal scenario, we must endure;
What steps have we taken to curb but chant?

Our genes are changing fast, yet man's the cause;
We spill the oil and dump nuclear wastes;
New carcinogens then become our boss;
Man keeps changing most things including tastes;

Why blame the earth, our fate and God and Stars?
'Tis men who had put Nature in shackles;
And things get worse by man-made ugly wars;
Man must not change environs, he tackles.
Let better sense prevail inhuman minds;
All man-made dirt can't be hidden 'hind blinds.

On Death

Death, thou art a harden’d crook!
Trying souls unwary to hook;
By the waters of a brook;
Few elderly to book.

Never art thou better than Birth!
Without which, no soul gets Mirth;
By Baptism, the Soldier of God
Enters His Abode, of the Lord.

Fie Death! Thou art a fool to steal
Souls unready to die- I feel;
But only through thy cruel Kiss,
Open the gates to Heaven’s Bliss.

God, He redeemed this sinful world
Through you; To show His love, I’m told;
His Resurrection proved Him God!
By thee, man goes to His Abode.

Man dies by fire, water, soil;
Soul climbs the celestial trail;
The unwary cannot get bail!
One day, all must to Him set sail.

Some day, man will have to die!
And in the grave, rest for a while;
The body, soul shall then live come,
For His Judgment, from every tomb!

We gotta live; We gotta live!

We gotta live; We gotta live!
No matter what, to us happens;
Our days on earth must still linger;
Though we lose our limb and finger;
Let eyes blind be; our ears hear not;
Our mind fear-filled; our legs won’t start;
Disease or strife, poverty rife;
Preserve we must, our precious life.
Organs may fail, failures may come;
With Hope men live and great become;
Disfigured though, our parts remain,
We trudge our way in life’s domain.
Wearily walking every lane,
We may fall down but rise again;
We gotta live; We gotta live!
We gotta live because we came;
God is our Guide, let us all strive;
Though life proves a treacherous game;
We gotta live; We gotta live!
Our life is His; In Him we live!

Sonnet: The Physicians Greatness

Oh Physician, thou art really great!
Remarkable is thine intelligence;
Adeptly, thou changeth the illness’ fate;
Extra-perceiving man of common sense!

With naked eyes, thou maketh right diagnosis;
The masses benefit by thine prowess;
Endowed by God with intuition’s largess,
Thou canst yet, blindly give prognosis.

The man with knife believes only when seen;
The man with ’scope magnifies and believes;
The x-ray man sees patients thro’ eyes keen;
Thou man with steth, by ear and touch perceives.

Thou art the greatest specialist on earth!
Alas, thine number is seeing its dearth.

dr john celes

Sonnet: Life

Life is a mirror that can break- take care;
Life is a journey, we all take- make it;
Life can be treacherous to some- beware
Life is a game, we all must play- keep fit.

Life is an example- copy the good;
Life is a joy- enjoy, remain not blind;
Life is a feat to try- make it you could;
Life is evanescent- that’s what you’ll find.

Life has its greatness- all men can achieve;
Life has sad moments that none can avoid;
Life has surprises which none can believe;
Life has some things that become null and void.

Life is so wonderful despite its cross;
Life is a blessing- so live for the cause.

dr john celes

Sonnet: Count On God

God is the best refuge for all in life;
Just count on Him; He surely can do things,
And mitigate our sufferings and strife,
And make the common men to look like kings.

Just trust in God and allow Him to deal,
With problems which we cannot hope to solve;
For God alone can wounds of heart/mind heal,
And complexities of our life, resolve.

No one dare challenge pow’r of Almighty!
All live and lifeless things obey His words;
He’s the only path to Eternity:
The Good Shepherd on earth to many herds.

God’s wisdom to men chosen never fails;
He is the Wind that drives life’s boat with sails.

dr john celes

Sonnet: Have Trust/Faith In God

Have trust in God and things will turn out right;
Have faith in God and mountains melt like ice;
Have trust in Him- temptations you can fight;
Have faith in Him and Life will become nice.

Have trust in God for He can do all things;
Have faith in God who solves problems we can’t;
Have trust in Him who selects Leaders/ Kings;
Have faith in Him who feeds Ants /Elephant.

Have trust in God for He is our Friend true;
Have faith in God who remains always near;
Have trust in Him who brings the rain and dew;
Have faith in Him who is our Father dear.
Have trust in God who is so kind yet terse;
Have faith in Him who rules the universe!

Sonnet: What’s Life?

Life isn’t a hundred-meters’ dash but ’tis
Rather a marathon of unknown length;
Life isn’t a matter of material bliss,
But of hard-work, will-power and mind’s strength.

Life isn’t a fifty-meters hurdles but
Rather a decathlon, grueling style;
Life isn’t a matter of a fine hair-cut,
But of struggles and protracted a smile.

Life isn’t a weight-lifting championship,
But tests one’s stamina in every way;
Life isn’t a war of nerves but of friendship,
Of morals, goodness, ethics every day.
Life isn’t a rocket to glory, stardom,
But a sustained access to God’s kingdom!

Sonnet: Make Peace With Your Brother

Do make up with your brother man, make up!
Your flesh and blood who feels for you all life;
What if he comes to freely with you sup!
The peace you make can remove all your strife.

What if he had really done you wrong!
Aft’r all your brother, mustn’t you forgive him?
Someday, he will regret and for you long;
Make peace; make life around you lesser grim!

‘Don’t come to me’, says God, ‘unless in peace
With your brother; then you offer your heart!’
Just one kind word can many hearts appease;
We must forgive others ’fore we depart!
So first make peace with your earthly brother!
Then only can you love your next neighbor!

Sonnet: Dear Child

Sweet girl, firstborn in an alien country!
’Tis sad your parents now cannot rear thee;
Grandparents tend to thee- aren’t you lucky?
Your mom and dad miss thee so miserably.

You breathed first air of a foreign country!
Be happy breathe you now your Moth’rland’s air;
Maybe, you miss your parents’ luxury;
Tho’ life to you has been unfair, ’tis fair!

The water you now drink isn’t very clean;
The food you take, less sterile than you should;
But bless’d are you, amidst a loveful scene!
Whatever happens now is for your good.
Pity your parents, who are unlucky,
And miss your screams and smiles and lullaby!

Sonnet: Salute The Man

Salute the man who is elderly and wise;
Salute the man who accepts not a bribe;
Salute the man who’s scholarly and nice;
Salute the man who’ll discipline prescribe.

Salute the man who is strict to the core;
Salute the man who’s plum, very honest;
Salute the man who’s experienced, can’t bore;
Salute the man who teaches without rest.

Salute the man who ne’er is discontent;
Salute the man who’s a ‘Bailey and love’!
Salute the man who lives always a gent;
Salute the man who would get reward above.
Salute the man, a medical teacher,
Who spent all life in cutting and suture!

Sonnet: A Handicapped Speaks

Alas, I’m born much handicapped in life,
In a world of competition and great strife;
How can I spend my days on earth this way?
O tell me God, my Creator, I pray.

“I made thee pot of clay with love and care;
Sometimes, deformed become some earthenware;
Thou art my pot, ordinary or rare;
But however, I made thee: you’ll well fare.”

“I made the flowers in such variety;
Not one complains of the other’s beauty;
A few are flowers of great rarity;
And some wilder; yet, they all do charity.”
“Thy Maker knows well thy travail, my son,
Thy handicap needn’t make thee, life to shun.”

Sonnet: From Space

And Armstrong saw the glorious Earth below,
Across the window of the Space-shuttle;
Indeed, it looked so beautiful and Oh,
The land looked green with a bluish mantle.

It was a wonderful sight to perceive,
The grace of which he’d never ever seen;
Scuttling through space, he couldn’t his eyes believe;
The Moon was dwarfed by the Earth’s heavenly scene!

Tho’ from the Earth one thought the Moon look great,
It wasn’t really so from outer space;
One never knows the value of one’s feet,
And God-given beauty of his true face.
A man’s good deeds surfaces when he’s dead;
Beauty’s perception lies in one’s own head.

Sonnet: The Wild Grass

The wild grass grows in a luxuriant way,
In the adjacent ground, beyond the fence;
It spilled over in our compound to stay;
My mind knows not any kind of defense.

But the greens I raised with small seed/ flower,
Has spread across the ’midst of the wild grass,
Like how the good fight the evil brother;
When grown, I pulled the wild grass out, en masse.

Allows God, wicked men to well remain;
To some of them, He gives a longer road;
When things get awry in their own domain,
They crashing come to ground with their sin’s load!

O evil-doers, hell await thee all;
There isn’t a spring for thee after thy fall!

dr john celes

Sonnet: John Keats

It was a pretty Flower, in full bloom!
One that had grown, despite severe travail;
When like a bolt, it broke to meet its doom;
Consumed in youthful years by cruel gale!

The flower made the plant and landscape proud!
By premature demise, left utter gloom;
Its fragrance reached far like Milton’s voice loud;
Could not the Maker find the flower some room?

Most born and bred ’midst poverty and strife,
Some bards on earth sipped gall and poisoned drink;
Some ruthlessly denied a fruitful life,
Were turned to dust before, they could well ink.

The Keatsian odes will live for long to tell,
And toll aloud with pride, Poesy’s bell!

Sonnet: A Bit Of Patience

A bit of patience works out miracles;
A bit of patience puts off arguments;
A bit of patience problems well tackles;
A bit of patience preserves monuments.

A bit of patience can avoid hatred;
A bit of patience cools one’s anger off;
A bit of patience marks well good kindred;
A bit of patience makes many to laugh.

A bit of patience keeps good friends at peace;
A bit of patience can avoid big wars;
A bit of patience can jealousy cease;
A bit of patience can avoid big scars.
A bit of patience gives good advantage;
A bit of patience is good heritage.

Sonnet: Spousal Love

I know your heart is full of love for me,
Love that’s genuine and coming straight from heart;
Love that springs forth always spontaneously;
Love that’s showered in umpteen ways with art.

Oh, what finesse and magic has your love!
That works like balm and soothes my ailing heart;
And quenches my thirst like a fountain now;
The unseen force that triggers forth my art.

A spouse’s love is like a steep mountain,
Whose peak remains for long unreached, unseen;
’Tis waxing, waning; ’Tis sure and certain,
And keeps the sacred bond, always with sheen.
Praise be the spousal love that grows always,
In geometric proportions in one’s case.

Our Farewell-Song to P.M.C.

Our Alma-mater is P.M.C;
Our Alma-mater, we salute thee;
We are now full-fledged good Doctors!
We start to serve, the sick forever.

We will remember our College;
Until we reach our Life’s end-stage;
We had our days of much ordeal;
We are now all so free, we feel.

We had our tussles and fist-fights;
Happy to have just won our rights;
We had our days of rejoicings;
Entwined in love, today this song we sing.

We love our Teachers who taught us well;
To be quite patient always in Life;
And guided us in numerous ways;
Showing us all, that there are better days!

We look ahead to a future bright;
Our past was dear, sad days, despite;
We will miss this evergreen campus;
And the sweet songs that, Birds sang to us.

Recreation did suffer although;
Success in life always will show;
Our stay in P.M.C. was so great;
On the whole it, was a joyful state.

We will miss P.M.C.forev’r;
Farewell to our dear Alma-mater;
We are now full-fledged good DOCTORS;
Ready to heal the sick forev’r.

Our Alma-mater is P.M.C;
Our Alma-mater, we salute thee!
Farewell, farewell dear P.M.C.;
We will again, come to see thee.

Scientists

Since when a child, they toiled so hard,
In umptine fields, really starred;
Their lives passed off through night and day,
Hoping success in morrow’s way.
They spent their hours, days, weeks and years,
Struggled, becoming almost seers!
Musing sometimes in fantasy,
Alone in labs of secrecy;
Nation knew not their enterprise;
Their life was one great sacrifice;
They cared not for any glory;
For most, it was a sad story!
Working hard was their only aim,
Until their brains quite old became;
For years, their eyes ad missed the Sun!
Their kith and kin and all the fun;
Their rods and cones, sullen became,
Reading all life, though missing fame;
Unmindful of the raging wars,
The Wind and Rain, the Moon and Stars;
They slogged for more than money’s worth;
Their Nation’s need, their only oath!
Struggling to solve problems many,
Their work was Life and not funny;
While the world slept, awake they kept,
In sorrows, joys, they never wept;
They were their Nation’s real gems!
That grew like flowers atop stems;
The Sun never set in their lives;
Heroes yet, were treated like flies!
Uncaring for any returns;
Their fuels spent, were ashed in urns;
The Nation paid homage to some,
With Awards posthumous, handsome;
The rest remained like Stars unseen,
Perhaps, heaven will give them sheen!

Sonnet: Keep the Sabbath-day Holy

'Remember Man, to keep Sabbath holy',
The Third commandment of God clearly says;
And if you can't, 'twill be your own folly;
Your life gets spent wholly in worldly ways.

Oh, what a pleasure hearing Sunday Mass,
And taking part in God's great sacrifice!
God made the six days, for man's sake; Alas!
The Sabbath-Day is God's just asking price!

What guilty feelings fill my heart when I
Don't go for Sunday's Liturgical rites?
A good habit for soul's sake should not die!
God's candle in our heart, it serves to light.
Can I not spend just one day for God's sake?
'Tis worth the swim in Elysium- God's Lake!

Valentine's day of 1999

Valentine’s Day of nineteen ninety nine;
‘Twas the forty-second birthday of mine!
A day, I cannot forget in my life!
My first book of poems published ’midst strife.

Eight months’ poetic work came to lime-light!
My Pen’s struggle got covered with delight;
It started like India’s Pokhran Blast!
And ended with a fine finish at last.

I have joined the band of Poets today!
A proud Indian Poet, I should say;
Stunning array of poems, I display;
My heart pounds with music and is gay.

Just a sample of my poetic skill,
Like a bolt from the Firmament, it fell;
To my airy lute, loud tolls the Church bell;
Every literary heart is full of thrill.

A turning point in my career, perhaps;
Stimulating my right Brain’s many gaps;
This God-given Talent, I better use;
In me, the world will see a mighty Muse!

The happiest day in my life, I feel;
My yester-years’ woes are put under seal;
My Poesy had got off to a fine start;
I’ve got to toil hard for my poet’s art.

On Blood-donation

Bleed a little;
Bleed a while;
Bleed for someone;
Give him Life!

Blood is precious;
Blood is Life!
Give your blood
To save a life.

Some blood lost when
From blood-stream;
Saves a life fast,
Like in a dream.

Give your blood then,
To patients;
Give them life back,
Almost gone.

Blood-giving
Is sacrifice;
Life’s most sublime
Exercise!

Give the man pale,
Your blood red;
Watch life return
From the dead!

Make blood sharing
Your life’s prime aim;
Get replenished
Whence it came.

Bleed a little;
Bleed a while;
Bleed for someone,
Or he dies!

My Wife Beloved

My wife beloved, you are my wealth;
You are in life, my soul’s sole health!
Companion for life, my wife,
By sacred union for life.

My life could be empty always,
If not for you, sad would be days;
The Stars cannot really shine,
And all Nature cannot be fine.

My wife, you are a gem so rare;
In life, you are the face most fair;
The most precious a pearl from deep,
Much more precious than things I keep.

My caresses, you remember;
My weaknesses, you do ignore;
You love me much- Do I deserve?
And faithfully in life, you serve.

Sharing my joys, becoming coy;
Sharing my grief, withered a leaf;
And patient in my angry moods,
And cautioning me against falsehoods.

And without you, I am lust-blind;
Though I have eyes, yet light can’t find;
You tend to me when I am sick;
Majestic when quarrels I pick.

You tend well to my personal needs;
Make our children read, dress, have feeds;
If not for you, I am in trouble;
My problems then in life double.

You think of everyone’s future;
Teaching our kids, love to nurture;
Your love for me settles like dew;
Life will be boring without you.

You’re the woman ’hind my success;
Bidding me wear a newer dress;
Goading me to increase earnings;
In life, you give better meanings.
You are always my ‘better-half’!
You love me like a new-born Calf!
The words you speak, soothing my heart;
Entwined to you, I can’t depart.

You are my savior from all vice;
In life, my most useful device;
Giving me timely good advice;
Making me less foolish, more wise.

You give me love when I need most;
Without which I could be well lost;
Together Love, We will one day,
Our Maker greet and ‘Thanks’, both say.

I love to see you laugh and cry;
In those moments when you are shy;
Life can be wretched without you,
Your love for me is truly true.

Sonnet: Mother Mary, help of Christians

I came to you when problems just began;
I prayed to you to intercede with God;
For full three years, I am a hunted man!
Nevertheless, my trust lies in the Lord.

Until this time, I was tortured mind;
I’ve been harassed for long by friend and foe;
To terminate my service was their goal;
God took my side and so I know my woe.

A Good Samaritan had come as Dean!
God turned the tables on my ‘so-called foes’;
And suddenly, life turned to be less mean;
God brought me out unscathed from false-memos!

The honest mind need not fear men/devils;
God guides the men who fight over evils.

Sonnet: To my Big Brother

You are the best I have, my brother nice!
I know so well you suffer too like me;
Your heart is honest, broadminded, and wise;
I pray God must bless you quite soon surely.

You have a mind well-read, of course and sane;
I know that life has been to you unkind!
You are a boon, the elder son not bane;
Do continue your good work, I remind.

You are the one in whom I can confide;
Ever ready to help others always;
Don’t worry much, be brave; in God abide;
They are so nigh, your lucky, happy days.

So far, you have done well in life, don’t brood;
Be undeterred and never spoil your mood!

Sonnet: Trust in Jesus

Life has been kind to us despite our woes;
God has provided timely, when in need;
He has protected us from all our woes;
Life gave some sorrows but more joys indeed.

Despite our sins, God blessed our lives for years;
He forgives us but we don’t others’ sins!
As Friend and Guide, He has removed all fears;
Without His help, we cannot even wince.

Why not renew our faith in God, brethren?
With Him beside, no devil can tempt us;
Although He made us all from clay-earthen,
Our soul and Holy Spirit are things plus.
On no account, will God us ev’r forsake;
Let’s offer our suff’rings for Jesus’ sake.

Sonnet: Have a Child Soon

You have a child as early as you can,
Before the sun has set in your love-life!
Try hard- ’tis worth the labor woman, man;
Never worry about the added strife.

A family-life isn’t wholesome, spent childless!
Children are gifts of God, our living dolls!
The modern age has made earthlings reckless;
Without a child, you can’t for long rejoice.

Prepare the ground before you sow the seed;
But sow it only when conditions suit;
No married life’s joyful, childless indeed;
What is the use of growing trees sans fruit?
Yet, every tree must bear its fruit somehow!
Set right the environment but start right now.

 Sonnet: Why fear When God's near?

What if your enemy just follows you,
And monitors your rise most shamelessly;
Beware and keep away from such men too,
Who love to hound good men relentlessly.

What if your friends have become foes, whole-lot?
You live in solitude, no soul to talk!
Much noise emanates from an empty pot!
Don’t ever turn back; just continue your walk.

What if the mighty Satan chases you,
From place to place, pillar to post, endless?
Ignore his calls, appearing calm; just do
Right things, the harder way round with fairness.
When God’s with you, why should you ever fear?
He’s your Friend who cares- with heart and ear!

Sonnet: The Road To Righteousness Isn’t Easy

When just a child, I thought this world was good,
But never knew that wily were persons,
Who fought amongst for everything to food,
And sinned all life ’gainst God without reasons!

When now adult, I know the world bit well;
The honest ones still suffer for Truth’s sake!
Unfairness/ lies have made the world like Hell;
But success to undeserving is fake!

As wise adult, my intuition helps me,
Avoiding vices and evil-doers;
I don’t care for my so called destiny!
I love to be amongst the truth-lovers!
All days cannot remain always breezy;
The road to Righteousness is not easy!

Jealousy

Jealousy, thou green-eyed Monster!
Threat to the mind of the youngster;
Pervading all ages, places;
Prevalent in many races;
Thou infect the female gender!
Rarely the male who doth render,
His both eyes free of thine green sheen,
Unlike the Eve who cannot feign.
Thou rob’st the minds off peace- a shame!
Envy is thy other short name.
And Ye splitt’th the hearts which loved,
Like fire spread into a crowd;
Creating ill-will amongst friends,
Siblings, kith and kin, with no end;
Thine nasty work began from birth,
Polluting the fountain of Mirth;
Betwixt sisters of closer age,
Ye spared not elder men or sage;
Amongst neighbors, in vocation;
At work spot, play, avocation;
Ye spared not men of higher rank;
In thine clutches, their wives just sank;
In schools and any walk of life;
In colleges, thou gavest strife;
Envy the root of all evil!
The prime method of the devil;
O God, protect us from this Moth!
That hits the eyes of man, beast both!

Sonnet: God, I Wish to be a Speck of Dust near Thy Feet!

I happen to be just a speck of dust,
O God, how can I ever question Thee?
To be worthy to touch Thy feet, I must
Be lucky to be blessed by Thee, sin free!

And if Thou walk’st the road, my home nearby,
How happy my heart and my mind would be?
When back to life I’ll come, after I die
I wish to see Thee in Heaven, surely.

And though from earthly clod, Thou had me made,
Mysteriously but with a divine aim,
Let me from Thee through sins of mine, ne’er fade,
But reach the place of Mirth from whence I came.
Let me a speck of dust lie near Thy feet,
And never be displaced or ev’r retreat.

Sonnet: God

As God is love, God looks at man with love;
As God is truth, man ought to be honest;
As God is kind, his kindness man must prove;
As God forgives, man must forgive his best.

When God made man, it was out of mere love;
When God made world, it was because of love;
When God suffered/ died, it was this to prove;
By Resurrection, He’as God from above.

God made Heaven- it was because of love;
And God made hell, to show He hated sin;
Redeemer God was born, this was to prove
That when world ends, the Almighty will win.
When God is one, why some worship the sun?
Christ is His son: man must the devil shun.

Sonnet: Peace

Peace is something which men on earth yearn for,
And talk for hours and days but seldom keep;
Which everyone needs for his/her mind, ‘cor’,
But which is superficial and not deep!

Peace is the absolute need of the day,
For neighbors, nations and the world at large;
For all mankind’s problems- the only way!
A duty everyone ought to discharge.

Peace is the most precious commodity,
That’s sought and kept by paying heavy price;
Essential for world’s community,
Which sometimes appears like a game of dice!
Peace is the food of mind and heart and soul!
The love of fellow-men- the only goal.

Orchid Atop The Manipal Hill

Blossomed an Orchid, atop a small hill!
Amidst wild grass, shrubs and wild life that kill;
The hill-top’s plateau underwent much change,
In a short span of time, in varied range;
The landscape into a township became,
The wilderness vanished, buildings came;
Made from the hill’s laterite, rose to fame,
And etched for itself an especial name!
It was harder than the hardest known brick;
The local manpower built it up quick;
No longer did the Tigers, Leopards prowl;
Nor could you hear the Hyena’s howl!
A Citadel had sprung up on the hill;
Just one man’s missionary zeal , vision still;
Did make this amazing reality,
Happen with his unique effort, mighty;
A medical-man turned business-man!
The pioneer of the Manipal-group
Of Educational Institutions;
Who broke records with his string of ventures,
An achievement rare for an Indian.
Over-looking the Arabian sea,
Now stands the esteemed M.A.H. E.;
Where the low hill came to its end-point,
Rose in leaps and bounds, a family-joint!
From the poor man’s pittance saved,
The Syndicate Bank’s foundation was paved;
Some acres of land were purchased for use,
To house the many Institutes;
The whole venture was made self-sufficient;
By the money, the Bank wisely lent;
The hill was reclaimed from its landscape wild,
It was the great TMA Pai’s brain-child!
This ORCHID blossoms on Manipal-hill,
Of beauty and splendor, unequalled still!

Sonnet: A Mother's Greatness

A mother's heart has love for all children
Each child she bears and rears in similar way
She tends to needs like hen to each chicken
And gets up early, wearied though by day.

She knows in person each and every child
She knows their wants even before they ask
Unlike her husband, she is always mild
And earnestly she tends to every task.

Each child appears an apple of her eye
She intercedes for little things they need
Ignoring faults, she loves to slog and die
She is the Angel who readies each feed.

There isn't a soul like mother on this earth
She guards each child so selfishly since birth.

Sonnet: What the Stars foretell?

Look at the stars, a handiwork of God!
Who knows the mystery of their twinkling light?
Like eyes of God, they shimmer light so odd,
In countless numbers, studding sky of night.

What is their role in human destiny?
What is the need for stars at all, I ask?
They seem to depict faith and harmony,
Whose secrets to unravel- is man’ task.

What beauteous objects fixed light-years away!
Yet, God intended stars for some purpose;
But man can ne’er find it out any day;
God’s glory, perhaps they depict to us.
When stars can look mysterious to man’s eyes,
How much more God must be- who never dies!

Sonnet: The Paradox of life

Each day, someone is born and someone dies;
Each day, things good and bad happen on earth;
Each day, men speak some truth and needed lies;
Each day is kind yet, kindness seems a dearth.

Each day brings new tensions, old harmony;
Each day starts wars yet peace is aimed at talks;
Each day brings poverty, sometimes money;
Each day brings joys but woe anew us stalks.

Each day, we forget God to then regret;
Each day, we become worse and better too;
Each day, we build assets, take newer debt;
Each day, our peace of mind, we all undo.
Each day is meant to improve in all fronts;
Each day, God saves our souls while Satan hunts!

Sonnet: Good Old-friendship

The love we bear as friends is deep-rooted;
The tussles we have had aren’t worth a pie;
Our altercations are but else-mooted;
Until the end, our friendship should not die.

Let not our foes plant ‘land-mines’ in our place;
Let not our enemies take advantage;
Let not the middlemen distract our gaze;
We have a common worthy heritage.

Our friendship’s old by quarter century!
Some wait to see it fall apart somehow;
Misunderstandings, better we bury;
Our unity is precious for us now.
The opportunists try to break our peace;
Our friendship’s strong and never will it cease.

Sonnet: Love Unchanged

Poem: ’Tis good that you are whatever you are;
’Tis good that you are not something different;
’Tis good that you are hail, hearty so far;
’Tis good that you aren’t very dependent.

’Tis wiser not think of yesteryears;
’Tis wiser not to dream of love then missed;
’Tis wiser not to have all open ears;
’Tis wise to remain even one unkiss'd!

For love resurrected is love reborn;
And love reborn is one unrealistic;
And love unreal, can’t our hearts adorn;
And love that can’t adorn hearts is mystic!

’Tis good that things had happened in this way;
’Tis good that love has stood the tests of day.

Sonnet: The Doctor is Human Too

The man who heals has not a heart of stone;
From bricks and mortar, his body isn’t made;
Like you, he is as much flesh, blood and bone,
And suffers from much stress and is ill paid.

Sometimes, his best of knowledge can’t help him;
His decisions are fraught with blunders too;
He wages battles to save lives so grim;
When life has left body, what can he do?

He faces many ethical questions;
Sometimes, things go awry, unexpected;
Don’t blame him squarely for all kinds of sins;
He’s a public figure respected.
The doctor helps, God is the one who heals!
The patient’s fate, God is the one who seals.

And People Still Smoke!

All know-“Smoking is injurious to health”
The label on cigarette-packs too says!
And this is just the legal requirement;
To sell Tobacco in so many ways!

The walls are painted in such wondrous hues!
That captivates the mind of any soul;
The advertisements are cleverly done,
That reaches hearts of everyone- prime goal.

The smoker is soon slave to Tobacco!
The magic works in any type of clime,
Relaxing minds and taking stress off work;
The habit turns addiction in short time.

While planes and trucks carry the poison leaf,
The air gets polluted- anyone’s guess!
The unwary souls breathe and invite grief;
Lung-Cancer takes its toll in much excess.

While Academies discuss key-issues,
The world remains confused by smoke-hazards;
Who cares about the lives unfairly lost,
Though dangers are highlighted by ev’n Bards?

15th of August, 1998 in India

My sleep got disturbed, thrice that day;
I could not sleep tho’ a holiday;
My mind was filled with thoughts unclear;
I got up in the morn, much earlier;
‘Twas India’s Independence Day!

Thunder, lightning filled the night’s Sky;
The day much overcast did fly;
The Rain was just a drizzle that day;
Wetted the ground of mud and clay;
‘Twas 15th of August, a rainy day.

The pea-birds howled and groaned that night;
The Rain made them shiver with fright;
Though ten, it looked like six in the morn;
The Sun behind the clouds had gone;
The Sky ground-glass remained that day.

The leaky tap-waters that fell,
Raised wavelets, ploppy-toned and swell;
Rain-drops on cables looked like pearls;
Dropped, formed again, enticing souls;
It looked it would rain long that day.

Rain-drops hanging beneath fir-twigs;
Glittered in the scarce light like figs;
The whole tree was aglow, alit;
A thing of beauty, don’t miss it!
The Sky looked like a barred-white board!

A frail, brown-skinned, bony human,
With sack on head, bent-back, he ran!
The Indian was agonizing!
Tho’ people keep sermonizing!
Fifty years after Independence!
What good was done for the common-man?

 Don't Worry, His Ways are Noteworthy

Be happy in what you have done;
Be happy that God is your friend;
Care not for the things you had won,
Life is not the same for all men.

What has happened is now the past;
Things which we now cannot recast;
Lets do the best in our present;
Hoping God makes future pleasant.

O judge us Lord with a kind heart;
Disheartened as we are poor men;
Had we then been what we are now;
We needn’t have to sinfully bow.

Sinners, we are, yet love Thee God;
Take us to thy heaven’s Abode;
We long to rest in your sweet home!
Wherefrom perennial love comes.

In Life, you don’t feel too guilty;
God knows our human frailty;
Don’t worry, your life was worthy;
God’s ways are strangely noteworthy.

Fear Not, You Beggar-man!

Fear not, you beggar-man!
When thou scorch’d by the Sun,
Which tanned thy head and skin;
No food or drink, grow thin!

Trudging the streets and lanes;
Seldom a person sane,
You meet; begging for alms
Or for coins in your palm.

On the pavement, you sleep;
Rain, no mercy doth keep;
Half-asleep, the night is gone;
Still drenched, Dawn has come on!

With loin-cloth and a bowl,
Beg you with odour foul;
With bent back, weary walk;
A sick look, none to talk!

You walk for miles and miles;
Emotionless but smiles!
With not enough good food;
On meandering roads.

In fast changing seasons,
Without any reasons,
With feet very fissured;
Uncomplaining, you walk!

No joy, hope or sadness,
In a world of madness;
Unfortunately, born;
Your days linger on.

Perhaps, within your heart,
To God, you must have asked;
“Why am I born like this,
with a wretched, unfair kiss? ”

Friendly 'Adwise'

Like a Kid behind a Goat, I came!
Frisking like a Lamb, I’as tame;
What happened next, ‘Tis a shame;
I wonder if ‘tis in life’s game!

This earthly life is not for name;
In life, we ought to be the same;
Condescending, help like a Crane;
Let duty, toil, become our aim.

Build friendship better than courtship;
Friend is one who helps in hardship;
Humbling oneself, be exalted;
Climb the ladder of life, humbled.

Life is short; let friendship long last;
Bring happy memoirs of the past;
Transient progress, should not cast,
A fast blotch in character fast.

Drink when you ensure ‘tis safe first;
Drink with care, only if you thirst;
Life’s ewer hath waters so deep!
Life’s ladder is climb’d but not steep.

Live life the best way possible;
God looks to rest impossible;
Work hard in life; Work like a sledge;
Misjudge not others; God will judge!

Man when skied, crashes to the ground;
Ascends a hill to tumble down;
Lost in forest, can you reach Home?
Walk on any road, yet reach Rome.

Steeper the fame-graph in life’s-hall;
The heavier the likely fall;
Accomplish life, tuned to His call;
Reach, we must that Abode for all.

Life is one of perilous vales;
Mountain-terrains, flash-floods and gales;
Trudging, we reach an unsafe place today,
Hoping haven in morrow’s way.

Sonnet: God Decides Our Earthly-life

I sought a dollar, got a penny just;
I sought a penny, found dollar instead;
I sought a lover, got a load of lust;
I sought but lust yet, got a soul to wed.

The things we seek, don't happen in our time;
The things we search are found neither our way;
The things we see, we cannot always mime;
The things we want, we get some other day.

Man's labour long and plans evade fruition;
God's blessings come just like a waterfall;
The ways of God defies any diction;
He cares for all creatures mighty and small.

Our patience gives us success or defeat,
A man who's blest can walk life-time bare-feet.

Sonnet: Be Glad Always, Man!

Be glad for all the blessings, God gave you;
And thank the Lord with all your heart and soul!
Be glad for all the good things, you could do,
Within the scope God-granted for your role.

Be glad for all the sufferings, God gave you,
For, that’s the way, you learnt to love Him more!
Be glad for all the things, you could not do,
God will open to you another door!

Be glad for all the misdeeds, you couldn’t do!
Perhaps, your life could have been worse than this;
Be glad for all your good health and wealth too;
Forget your woes and thank God for His bliss!
     Be glad, you kept your Road to Heaven, Man!
     And praise the Lord in every way, you can.

Sonnet: Genes Matter But…

No longer secret's the genome of man!
The gene make-up of all beasts will be known;
Man's actions and misdeeds, alter none can,
Except man himself, using his mind own.

How can the new knowledge of genes prevent
the growing crimes against men in this world?
For his grave sins unless man can repent,
He will suffer in hell or when he's old.

The society's problems, man must resolve,
Thro' self-control and love of his neighbor;
By brotherhood of nations, man can solve,
Most of the problems and make earth better.
Knowing one's genes is not the solution;
Know thine own mind by self-realization.

sonnet: Easter's Coming Fast!

 The Lent has started once again this year;
The time to fast, abstain from spirits, meat;
The time to curb amorous sounds by ear;
The time to be holy; pray more, less eat.

Let’s clean our minds of cob-webs of past sins;
Let’s mop our heart's floor of its sinful stains;
Let’s grace-paint walls and empty soul's sin-bins;
Let’s sacrifice, for God's sake, suffer pains.

The sufferings of Christ is fresh in mind;
His sacred blood shed on the Cross is true;
God's Love redeeming man from hell, we find;
Let’s have remorse for sins and change life's hue.

Let’s do the 'Way of the Cross' fervently;
Amend our lives for God more silently.

Though Pot I am, I am Thine Pot!

 Potter, Potter, making clay-pot!
Did you make me misshap’n somewhat?
Was it perhaps done on purpose?
Should I blame myself for my cross?

Perhaps, I was untimely born,
Or made in haste, Thine shop adorn!
May be Thine mood was not that good,
When Thou made me out of mere clod!

Perhaps, the mix was rather wrong,
Or else Thou sang a sadder song!
Perhaps, water salty was used;
And so I crack’d a bit when baked!

May be, I wasn’t well baked at all;
Or baked too much: suff’red a fall!
Perhaps, the hearth was not quite hot;

Perhaps, it was my own dear fault.

How do I serve Thee still? I muse;
Though handicapped, could Thou me use?
Could Thou recast my mishappen form,
So that I can most well perform?

Could thou alter my bizarre look,
Before people think I’m a spook?
Or will I be trampled by men,
Even before I say, ‘Amen! ’

Whatever my fate turns out to be,
Let me serve Thee most happily!
May be, I can’t be thine pot sought;
Though pot I am, I am Thine pot!
Though pot I am, I am Thine pot!

 The King's Beard

There lived a king with beard so long
And scalp with scarcely hair!
He used a comb and sang a song
And groomed it with great care.

The king was proud of his long beard
That made him look so wise!
The queen, his wife knew he looked weird
And cursed him for its size!

The queen was therefore always sad;
His lip got hid by hair!
But one day, she was rather glad;
She told him, she couldn’t bear!

One day, the king slept while he read
A book that was folklore!
He had a dream asleep in bed;
“His beard had grown some more!”

A burning candle-stick fell down
And lit the curtain-blind;
His beard had caught the fire sown!
The king was off his mind!

His nose smelt smoke: he woke in fright;
His beard was all aflame!
He shaved the stubs of hair by night
And took on him all blame!

The next day when the people saw
The king, they couldn’t believe
Their eyes and gazed at him with awe!
“Could eyes of dawn deceive?”

Tis Very Clear

What’s the conflict between God and my soul?
I know God is the Omnipotent One!
And being sin-free is my earthly goal;
To enter Heaven, isn’t something called fun!

What’s the confusion ’tween the right and wrong?
God gave each one conscience to sort this out;
Can uncleans’d sinners be, the saints among?
That pure souls only see God- there’s no doubt!

How can I serve devils and go to God?
One has to choose just one between the two:
Ignoring Heaven invites God’s just Rod!
You can’t serve devils and also God woo!

The devils lie always- hell is their home;
To seek more souls for hell- the devils roam.

Sonnet: My Offertory to God

God, give my father, some years that are mine;
He was so loving and so good to me;
He laboured hard to earn and keep us fine;
He did his duty most remarkably!

God, give my mother, some years that are mine;
She was so caring and reared us with love;
She struggled hard at chores to help us dine;
She was at peace-keeping, a real Dove!

O take away God, years, all that are mine;
The love Thou showed me was incredible;
The warmth Thou gave was better than Sunshine;
My heart has memories, indelible!

O take away God, my entire life-span;
Most precious thing, I can offer as man!

Hats off to the Doctor

Hats off to the Doctor duty-bound,
Who wakes up from his slumber deep at night,
To tend to patient writhing in great pain,
But utters not a word that hurts him more!

Hats off to the Doctor who works hard,
Applying mind and heart in diagnoses,
And labors endlessly to treat the sick,
And brings back laughter to the bed-ridden!

Hats off to the Doctor with great zeal,
Who learns the art of healing all his life,
And stays by patient’s bed-stead hearing him,
Consoling, counseling and chiding too,
If need be!

Hats off to the Doctor with Ethics,
Who listens to his conscience all life,
Who will not fleece the poor man afflicted,
But rescues souls adeptly from their date
With Death!

One of my first Children's Rhymes
copyright by Dr John Celes

Whither civilization today?

A pick-pocket gets stripp'd, beaten by mob;
A child-lifter is lynch'd in broad-daylight;
When man's alone, people are keen to rob;
For anything, everything, people fight.

A bus gets stopp'd and some men's throat's are slit;
A driver's killed; the car's driven away;
A wife is dowsed by her husband and lit;
More and more people are becoming gay.

Who knows if 'tis consented sex or rape?
Who does not possess perversions of sex?
The West has problems; let not the East ape;
Our modern life is stressful and can vex.
Today, 'tis hard to live with sanity,
Our earth's just one stop to Eternity.

Sonnet: Which is easier?

Which is easier, to shave off your face-hair
Or to maintain a long and flowing beard?
Which is easier, to cycle like a hare,
Or to trudge your way uphill with the herd?

Which is easier, to float the logs downstream,
Or to tusk them one by one to the mill?
Which is easier, to shoot lion in dream,
Or to fight it in its den and to kil1?

Which is easier, to break a whole mountain,
Or to make it crumble into small stones?
Which is easier, to set a lit fountain,
Or to produce a grave of human bones?

Unnatural things are quite easy to do,
Natural ones sometimes, impossible too.

Sonnet: what do we do?

Oh, should I take such risks or play it safe?
I wonder whether things are worth their risk!
There is both love and murder in a cafe;
Even the Chief-guest, you may need to frisk!

Alas! nothing is guaranteed these days;
There is much wealth in rubbish/garbage too;
To become wealthy, people devise ways;
Conscientious duty, most men fail to do.

Nevertheless, people go for short-cuts;
Most men are impatient in things they do;
There are skyscrapers, in the midst of huts!
Life's problems come to rich and poor men too.

A balanced mind is what we need these days;
To keep soul pure, we don't have umptine ways.

Sonnet- September 11, USA

 Four giant ‘birds’ had fallen from the skies!
Not on their own but piloted by men;
All suicide-bombers of unknown ties,
To raze down skyscrapers that touched heaven!

The hijacked planes with passengers and crew,
Swooped down into the buildings one by one;
Some thousands died but saved were just a few;
Hijackers died with their missions ‘well done’!

What fanatic, bedeviled men has earth!
What dastardly and heinous crimes, they had done!
A mighty nation lost its mighty mirth;
Billowing smoke had hidden Moon and Sun!

Can we forgive these men for their mad act?
The world demand’s just blood for blood- the fact.

Sonnet:Little Things Matter Much

Divine we feel when parched mouths/ lips well drink,
Tender-coconut water in midsummer!
On finding sea-shells on the shore, child thinks,
‘God made this world so beautiful, brother! ’

What joy afills the children’s minds when rain,
Drizzles suddenly on their way back home;
There is great joy when man is free from pain
Or climbs a giant geo-desic dome!

A beggar’s heart is filled with joy that’s true,
When given food after starving for days;
The joy’s intense seeing the rainbow’s hue!
The starry night with moon well proves God’s ways.

Some things though small afford a greater joy;
In Nature’s lap, all men ought to enjoy.

Sonnet:Light

How can the wick of life rise high aflame,
When Pride’s mantle surrounds its dusky hue?
How will the man of ego take self-blame,
When selfishly, he denies others’ due?

Light is to dispel darkness from the earth!
Light is to shine aloft for everyone!
Light is to give warmth, sitting ’fore a hearth!
Light is to see and enjoy like the sun!

And that is why the lighthouse is kept high!
And that is why the rail-way gate has light!
And that is why the signal-lights shouldn’t die!
And that is why the headlights should be bright!

Let light not dazzle, blinding others’ eyes;
Light is a virtue; don’t make it a vice!

Sonnet:Life's Like A Train-journey

Life's a train journey; God's the driver;
We're off to a place called Eternity;
Disembarking's left to each passenger;
From birth till death, We choose any city.

This train is safe to travel till the end;
We should not put our head and limbs outside;
No matter through tunnel or acute bend,
The journey's certainly a jolly ride.

The speed of train is left for one to choose;
The conditions of travel's left to each;
'Tis left to each to sleep, watch, work or booze;
God's City is within anyone's reach.

The rail is safe; so is the engine too;
To reach God's place, depends only on you.

Sonnet:Life's Approach

There is a second face for coin of life;
There is another pole when you have one;
There is another use of utmost strife;
There is another use for all works done.

All things have demerits and merits, too;
The force of life is negative and plus;
There is both good and bad in me and you;
Our earthly-life has both blessings and curse.

See just the beautiful aspect of things;
Be optimistic in your outlook, Man;
Problems have beset, both paupers and kings;
Work hard; face them, steadfastly, if you can.

Sweetness is sweeter after bitter taste;
Despite our sins in life, we must be chaste.

Sonnet:Life’s Truths

The man in luxury becomes obese;
The man who accepts bribe has more expense;
The black-moneyed with time can’t live in peace;
He is a fool who has no common-sense!

Much aches come when somebody uses quilt;
The seated-man develops low back-ache/ strain;
The river floods but leaves behind much silt;
The threshold’s high for men who withstand pain!

A lazy man remains a fool for long;
The man of pride must suffer nasty falls;
You shan’t always sing life’s disgruntled song;
Man must listen to daily Nature’s calls!

We must wake up no matter how long nap;
How much the rich from poor suck bloody-sap?

Sonnet: Rule Your Life

Poem: Life gives me thorns that appear like roses;
Life gives me strife that become stepping stones;
Life turns desert reminding of Moses;
Life tempts my flesh; I love the ?marrowed? bones!

Life gives downpours but I am warm within;
Life gives much sun; I seek the trees? shadow;
Life gives vices but I avoid big sin;
Life gives machines; I choose the simple hoe.

Life brings me woes but they strengthen my heart;
Life brings landslides but I am upon rock;
Life gives lucre but I prefer the cart;
Life gives fashions but still I love the frock!

Life gives most things I never wish to get;
My selflessness and prudence wins, I bet.

Happy New year, 2006!

Born is A New Year!
Gone is an old year;
Let?s add new cheer,
Live without fear.

Greet your neighbors;
Greet some strangers;
Greet all your friends;
And make amends.

'Tis never late
To change ones fate;
Problems abate:
Wait for that date.

Forget past woes;
Forget chaos;
With hope, of course:
Thus, our life goes.

Abide in God;
Await His nod;
Avoid His rod,
And thank the Lord.

When God's with us,
There is no curse;
Walk without fuss;
He sure will bless.
